What to do if your microwave sparks
Stop the microwave immediately if you see sparking. Turn it off and unplug it if safe. Do not continue operating it to test the fault.
Check for obvious external causes
Once it is switched off and cool, check whether metal utensils, foil or dishes with metallic trim were placed inside. Remove items only when safe to do so.
Do not open the casing
Microwave ovens contain high-voltage components that can retain a dangerous charge even when unplugged. Never attempt internal repairs unless you are qualified to do so.
When to call a technician
If sparking continues, the interior cover appears damaged, or you notice burning smells or unusual noises, leave the appliance off and request a professional inspection.
